Make Your Own Photobooks

How long does it usually take someone to create a photo book?

by Ryan

If I have a pile of photos on my computer and I want to create a book. The steps that I see are:

1. Get some software like Picasa or iPhoto that will allow me to organize my photos. (Free, 10 minutes provided I know which software I want and I know how to use it).
2. Organize and filter my photos (days or weeks if I have a tonne of photos - which I do). Not to mention things like cropping and editing - even the basic stuff.
3. Upload them onto a site like Blurb. (1 hour to decide which publishing site to use, learn the basics of how to use it, sign-up, etc.)
4. Design my book (layout, background, order, embelishments.....potentially many hours/days/weeks...)
5. Print and be happy!

Although the tools are now easier then ever. I think many people, myself included, are not doing this because it's just too overwhelming. Too many choices - everything from which photos to include, which publisher to use, what does the layout look like, etc.

I would imagine that most people would love to have a book. But I would imagine most people don't have the time/passion/desire to actually go through all that to make a book. And others may be able to get through the initial choices to get started...but find it too difficult to actually finish the project and give up.

Would love others thoughts on this.

Making Photo Books in a Timely Basis
by: Linda

Ryan:
We get some site statistics from people who click through to the photo book printers sites -- and it is definitely true that people don't tend to finish many of their photo book projects.

In your question you have listed the steps it takes to get all of your photos ready to make a photo book, but you haven't said why you want to make your photo book.

You don't need to organize all of your photos before you make a photo book. You just need to have enough pictures that fit your purpose.

Now, if your purpose is to have a printed archival copy of all of your photos, then it does take months to make that type of book with all the photos that you have. But, if you want to make a photo book of a recent family reunion you will have most of your photos at hand.

I am totally for having all your pictures organized. It makes life very easy when it comes time to making something special. The time it takes is totally worth it. But, the best thing to do is start organizing all your new pictures when you download them. Then you can work on all your old pictures a little at a time.
