Blurb and MyCanvas do not cut it... Who does??

by Iris
(Boston, MA)

I have been searching for a company that will produce the best looking custom cover book with quality binding. I first used Blurb to create a softcover book and was very disappointed with the lack of quality in their binding and their prints. I ordered the same book three times and got very different results from each one. The colors and the way they cut the pages of each book were different on each order.
So then I moved onto MyCanvas where I created a 67 page 14x11 photo album. The software was wonderful: offered hundreds of frames, embellishments, clipart, and much more! I received the book in the mail and was not completely satisfied with the quality of the binding and custom hardcover. The spline looks and sounds very flimsy. It squeeks and bends. It looks like someone took two rectangular pieces of chipboard and wrapped them with the picture I selected for the cover. It really takes away from the value of this book which is unfortunate because the inside pages are outstanding. Also, the cover's corners are slightly ripped and you can see the chipboard. How am I supposed to give this as a gift!?

I'm very frustrated. Does anyone know of a company that provides a similar software like MyCanvas and produces a flawless custom book cover and exceptional binding and picture quality?

Some more considerations..
by: Dimitri

I agree with the previous posters as far as their comments on MyPublisher and Shutterfly goes ( I have ordered but not yet received a book from Blurb ) I've also tried the Mac's Iphoto with excellent results.

I have had an excellent experience with photobook Canada ( about the same quality as MyPublisher )

It's really difficult to evaluate results from different photobook makers ( assuming the quality stays the same from book to book ) because there are a few other factors to consider.
Software: Some of the software f.e. is terrible in terms of flexibility I found PhotobookCanada to be the best ( it allows you to manually change the size of the frame.. as opposed to having it fixed and having to adjust the photo to it or change template to get what you want..).

Shipping: I found huge differences.. Shutterfly being the slowest.. MyPublisher the fastest ( but of course you pay through the nose for Fedex )

Site Availability : Believe it or not it took 2 solid days of trying to upload my book to MyPublisher last week because their server was overwhelmed... and of course during that period they were virtually incommunicado !

Has anyone tried LuLu photobooks ( I know.. the name is a turnoff ! )

cheers
dimitri

Shutterfly, OurHubbub, MyPublisher
by: Anonymous

So far, I have used shutterfly several times with nice results. Binding is nice and picture quality is pretty good. I just tried ourhubbub (jostens) and was disappointed with the quality of the binding, cover and print quality. My favorite for quality is MyPublisher. The software was limited (although I haven't tried the newest versions), but the printed book (I used the deluxe linen bound large book) was gorgeous. Heavy paper, heavy cover and nice print quality. It was twice as expensive as the shutterfly book, but I was printing my father's family photo album and it made an heirloom quality piece.

Blurb Imagewrap Binding Stinks
by: CC

The imagewrap workmanship is sloppy and the cover images appeared as if displayed behind a translucent filter with distorted colour. The inside printing quality is marginal, nothing really to write home about. Cheap paper. An amateurish production, not worth a try.

My Photo Book Review Round-Up
by: Anonymous

I had asked myself the same question - "Whom do I want to use before I spend all this money? - and found it hard to find a good answer to my question. So I spent about eight months working on a massive round-up of 12 different companies. Here's how it turned out:

I tried Blurb but the color was never right. I switched to Adoramapix and am very pleased.

Who does make the best photo book cover?
by: Linda

This is a really good question, and I'd love to see what other people think. I know that there are people who have gotten books from Blurb and MyCanvas and have been quite happy. Does anyone else have any succes stories here?
